I’m taking the time to get into my new role as principal of my new Academy of Exquisite Living. It feels familiar, as in the design world, (I owned my own landscape architectural firm for 17+ years) the owners (myself included) usually refer to themselves as principals, too. I know you all out there probably think of me as a writer, but it’s funny; that label doesn’t seem to resonate with me as much. (I don’t even feel like looking up if that was the correct use of a semi colon in that last sentence.) I think of myself as a consultant who wrote a book. Writers, to me anyway, research, and can write about anything - I just write down what I know. And what I know is that these funny little shifts in environment seem to have huge repercussions in a person’s life...so I write.

What labels are you wearing? Which ones feel comfortable and which ones don’t - and why? Do you feel mis-labeled? Take a look at the fame guas in your environment. Do you want to try on another label - check out your career guas. And if you simply want to wear better labels - pump up the prosperity guas. :)

Question #1: How can we use feng shui to buffer our investments from the current stock market debacle?

Answer #1: First and foremost, stop feeding the fear. Turn off the TV if you have to give your anxiety a rest. Visualize your future as if it already worked out well already. The more you have trouble doing this, the more you need to do it. Find a local meditation group for additional practice or if you simply can’t muster visualizations up on your own. The more you can unhook yourself from the panic, the better off you are. Gratitude works wonders here as well. Each and every time you start to go into a spin, STOP and say out loud 3 to 10 things you are grateful for right now. This gets you in the present and gets you out of your negative spiraling mind.

Of course, doing whatever mundane, sensible action that makes sense is always a good idea (things like moving your money into a FDIC insured bank if it currently isn’t, or spreading out your funds to multiple banks to be fully FDIC covered.)

Now, I’ll give you the list that I feel is always appropriate for prosperity, and then we’ll get specific after that:

1. De-clutter. (The whole house and lot - not just the prosperity gua.) You can’t receive without a place (mentally, physically, emotionally etc.) for it.

2. Make sure all doors open fully. When opportunity knocks, you need to be able to open it up as wide as possible.

3. Give. I swear, ya gotta believe me, when you give, you receive. Listen to Nike and "just do it". How much? 10% of your gross income - or whatever absolutely pushes all your "this makes no sense" buttons until you get up to 10%.

4. Create a mindful prosperity gua - that is the left-hand rear area of a room or the whole home (from when you enter through the door.) Remember, wood is the element, purples and greens are great colors, and items that symbolize your abundance are also very helpful here. I know you all think purple only, so I’m reminding you that there are options.

If you’ve lost money, you may want to stop any chi leaks in the house:

1. If you have a window or door (a way in) directly opposite a door or window (a way out,) place the color red somewhere between the two. I like to hide red along the back door or window somewhere (behind the window treatment, or under a rug, etc.)

2. Fix all plumbing and landscape irrigation leaks. Spend money on the plumber and landscaper here...it will repay you in money savings.

For the particular issue of savings:

1. Place the name of your bank, brokerage firm, financial advisors, etc. in your helpful people box (A metal box with a lid that you have placed in the front right-hand area of your home or room based upon where the door that you enter into the home or room is located.)

2. Take your stock, mutual fund or other statement that shows your balances on it, and draw a lock or some other type of symbol around it that means "this is safe money" or "this balance is locked in right now" or whatever symbolizes how you want your money to be at this time. Then place it in the prosperity area of a room or even your desk - so you see it often throughout the day. Take the time to get creative here. Feel how good it feels to take charge of your situation by doing this. This is similar to a dream board or treasure map. The more creativity time you spend, the bigger the chi force that goes with it.

3. Plan the party. Pick a date sometime in your future (sooner or later - whatever feels right to you) and literally plan the "it all worked out well financially" party. Signal to the universal chi that you are confident in your outcome. Once again, the more time you spend on thoughts like these the more you are unhooking yourself form the mass hysteria that is around you.

Two years ago I was in strife; the Real Estate market started to decline -- but I sold my home and walked away with only a $600 profit. I moved in with a friend. A skeptical, but desperate friend called to enlist my advice. She and her husband are living on credit, barely making ends meet. As I described the Abundance area and where it could be found in her home and yard she literally gasped in horror. She revealed that it is their catch-all, junk room that they never use because it is filled to the brim with unused, broken, discarded junk. The wealth area of the yard was a shed filled with more junk. After a long conversation about her home and her mindset I sent her on her way with a FREE, but of course labor intensive cure. I told her to declutter mercilessly and then to clean the room, closet & shed like she was putting the house on the market. She called me screaming the next day to announce that her husband had received a commission check they had been waiting months for and her mom had sent her an expensive pair of shoes she's really been wanting. Two days later she called to (breathlessly) inform me that she hadn't stopped decluttering (now the entire house) and she'd found $700 in cash from their wedding that she thought they had spent and $300 in gift cards.

Now a believer, I am scheduled to go FS her house in person tomorrow.

Career:

My daughter told her boss she was interested in a better paying position that was open at work, and he seemed interested in promoting her. Then things got interesting. (I should mention that my daughter disliked her current job and found it boring. She just wanted to hang in there another 6-12 months for more experience, so she could apply for a job in Sales).

For about a month the position she wanted was open, and her boss told her he was going to be promoted. Then, without notice, the company reorganized their administrative staff, and two girls were laid off. My daughter was one of the girls let go, and I must say, she didn't think the Feng Shui was working real well at the time. However, this story ends well. After a month-long job search, she found a new job in Sales that she absolutely loves, which she describes as her "dream job." It was exactly the kind of job she hoped to find 6 to 12 months from now after she had more experience. I think it's interesting that the Feng Shui enhancements helped my daughter's career by skipping right over the promotion she wanted, where she would have been stuck another 6-12 months in administrative work she didn't enjoy. Instead, her career was fast-forwarded to the Sales job she hoped to find a year from now.

I was called in by a young couple who was recently engaged and had bought a house together in March. They found that they were arguing constantly and their romantic life was suffering. Did the house walk through and in the kitchen the sink was directly opposite the stove. I had them hang a 40mm crystal between the two and she reported today that the bickering has almost completely stopped! They also had a hat rack in the relationship corner of their bedroom which was decked out with wet bath towels. I’ve been receiving some emails saying that they purchased a book that had a chunk of pages missing and others duplicated. I have checked my inventory, and we’re good, but I’d advise you all to check the books you purchase to make sure pages 65-96 are actually in there! If you have one of these improperly-printed books, simply return it to the place you purchased it and let them know so they can pull other that may be on the shelves. Thanks.

As a speaker, well, it’s not too big of a stretch to imagine - I lose my voice often. I think it is the combination of the dry plane ride, the improper breathing while speaking, and my basic dry constitution. In traditional Chinese Medicine, you would say I’m "yin deficient," and from the Ayurvedic "dosha" perspective, I’m way too "vata." I ended up voiceless a couple of weeks ago, a condition that soon turned into a congested head cold, so I thought I’d offer you the tips that I use to get myself back to health:

For the throat and voice:

1. Eat pears and avocados - they are very moistening foods, and of course, drink plenty of liquids (warm or hot is best.)

2. Avoid cold foods, especially frozen foods like popsicles and ice cream. (I thought this one was obvious until my nurse mother came for a visit with a stuffed up head and wanted to go out for a milkshake!)

3. Avoid all dairy products (Hello, mom!) alcohol, nuts, and wheat products.

4. Gargle with warm water and sea salt.

5. I like the Chinese formula "Nin Jiom Pei Pa koa," which is a honey loquat syrup, but feel free to use honey or loquat syrup alone to sooth a sore throat.

For the congestion:

1. I’m not a fan of horseradish at all, but on this occasion, I eat about a ½ teaspoon each half hour for the first few hours, and then work my way off of it eating a nibble every couple of hours - nasty - but it really helps! Here’s a list of other phlegm-busters: Button mushroom, Olive mushroom, Watercress, Almonds, Walnuts, Lobster, Caraway, Cardamom, Garlic, Marjoram, Mustard seed, Thyme, White pepper, Black tea.

2. I use a hot compress on my face if I feel sinus pressure, pain, or congestion and sometimes, if I’m feeling up for it, I grate fresh ginger in the hot water that I am dipping my compress cloth into......this ginger compress technique is best suited for the kidney area of the body, but sometimes I veer off the path the apply it right to my throbbing face!

1. My body thrives in all environments!

2. I breathe easily, effortlessly, and mindfully.
