January 2003 This Month's Newsletter is About New Year's Resolutions, and of Course, De-Cluttering! CONTENTS:
It's January again. Time to de-clutter and get things in order for the new year. I have been asked many times how to break the clutter pattern in families where clutter seems to be a part of the family tree (you know, those children of "Depression" parents who save everything because they were taught "lack-thinking" from their parents.) Well, here's what I did in my home that may help someone out there. Last month was my son's 5th birthday. About a week before his party, I asked him to think about which toys he thought he could give away so he could make room for the toys he was going to get at his party. We started in his closet, and then proceeded to the family room. At first, he was choosy about what to toss wanting to hold on to everything. Then, he got in a "this stays, this goes" mantra, literally choosing every other item we pulled out of the drawer. So now we were tossing "a seemingly random to me" 50%. Then, he started saying "this goes, this goes, this goes," where we were now tossing 100% of his stuff. Then he got into dumping the entire drawer into the "to-go box" without even looking into it. At this point, my husband and I are starting to "fight for" some of his toys pleading "This is your favorite toy 2. Question & Answer of the Month Question: Do you have any tips for creating a good New Year's Resolution list? Answer: Yes, I do! The best part of a New Year's list is the writing it down part. Do NOT just say it. Write it down! Make it real! Dream about completing it! Do it in bullet form or write a story about what it's going to be like once you have completed it. All this falls back to the book I highly recommended a few months back, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn. If you haven't read it, I would try to make that your resolution! And if you have and you need additional resources, please feel free to dig into Henriette Anne Klauser's book Write It Down, Make it Happen. I'll put both of these on special this month if you need a copy. These two books are exceptional at teaching you techniques on how to get clear on what you want and making it manifest in your life. A fun way to manifest your dreams is to write down the list and share it with a group of friends. Pass out copies of your lists to each other so you can monitor all of the group's dreams as they come true! (I love getting friends involved in my rituals 3. House Check Tip of the Month Give or throw away your "old toys". De-clutter by giving any stray stuff that does not have a specific "home" in your house to a trusting friend for three months.
